ABOUT

After some 25 years in corporate life and having completed a programmatic CDM cook-stove project in Kenya, Mr. Mike Sherry wanted to apply his business experience to resolving some of the persistent issues that are clearly holding people in poverty in the Sahel. Kenya was familiar and seemed like a reasonable place to start. What was clear to him from numerous visits was that a local presence and moving some of the value chain into the local community was essential. His mission became to provide products and services that improve the health, wealth, education and environmental impact of people in the society.

Mwezi Limited was incorporated in the UK on the 4th February 2013. It was set up the UK as the tax breaks available were very attractive to equity investors for start-ups. They spent the first year undertaking research into possible sites, potential product suppliers and general market demand. In February 2014 they raised external equity to start operating.

They started selling the PAYG products in October 2016. Prior to that they had been selling solar products that relied on the customers making payments when prompted and chased. This was unsuccessful.

Our long term vision is not tied to the solar market per se as we focus on our customers’ requirements. However we believe that there are still huge opportunities in the home solar market, productive solar and mini-grid solar. We have been doing some field research on solar water pumping, purification and storage for both the domestic and agricultural markets. We believe that there are opportunities in agricultural irrigation, the agricultural food chain and e-learning. We see Mwezi as being the last mile retailer, installer and after-sales service provider for products that meet our mission statement.
